The Land Rover Puzzle
Land Rover Series I, 107
Manufactured from 1954 to 1958, the Land Rover Series I, 107 was available as a 5-door station wagon and a truck cabbed pickup in the home market and additionally as a van for some export markets.
The 107 designation reflected the length of the wheelbase 107”. This is the measurement between the front and rear hub centres, a common designation on Land Rovers right up to the current Defenders. The earlier short wheelbase models had been known as the 80”, 81” (A military variant fitted with a Rolls Royce B series engine) 86” and 88”. The LWB Station Wagon was only available in the 107 designation. 7,001 107’s were built with only 239 staying in the UK (probably due to the high purchase tax). In 1956 the Station Wagon cost £790 plus £396.07 (50%!) purchase tax in the UK, totalling a pricey £1186 and 7 shillings. As with all Land Rover models a lengthy list of options were available such as : Passengers wiper,(£4), Cab heater and demisters (£11.10s), Radio installation (£28.19s.6d). Towards the end of its production the Pickup was available in a 109” wheelbase. The vehicle was a big bolt together product, that enabled it to be shipped overseas as a giant jigsaw puzzle to be assembled by local labour. Some items would have been sourced locally due import taxes such as, tyres and glass. These 'kits' were known as C.K.D vehicles (Completely Knocked Down) and were shipped in a large wooden crate, (which we have done a loose copy of with our packaging). In this form, Land Rover established itself across the globe with satellite factories springing up in countries such as : Australia, and Africa. This process is still continued to this day. During the boom in oil and World exploration in the fifties, Land Rover truly were king and were to be found in the remotest places imaginable. Our puzzle is a basic representation of the 107 and builds up as either a station wagon, van or as a pickup. It is not intended to be detailed accurate model, it is purely a fun, educational, assembly skills and dexterity teaching puzzle. This 107 puzzle is based on one of the un-restored examples from the Dunsfold Land Rover Collection.
